Today I am letting a two year old plan my day.
Here are some of the things we might do.
If we feel like it. We are equally likely to not do them.
It’s just bubbles of possibility.
Some of the things we might do!
Roll around.
Get food all over our faces.
Stick toes in places that toes might go.
Look between our legs and be upside down. Upside down!
Sticky kisses on the insides of our elbows.
Stick our noses into the palms of our hands and be fascinated by that.
Blink. Cry. Laugh. Wave to the mailman.
Pick things up and then drop them.
Be all wet in the bath. With a duck.
Make a mess.
Laugh some more.
Say NO NO NO NO NO NO NO and ME ME ME ME ME ME and MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE.
Hold onto someone’s leg.
Want macaroni.
Drool.
Here’s the thing, which you probably already figured out.
There is no two-year old.
It’s just me. And Selma the duck.
I suck so much at days off that I need a theme to practice with. Hiro suggested that I throw myself an Upside Down Day. Which is a wonderful idea.
And this is how I’m playing today.
I am TWO! I am curious about the world. I am loud. I am unapologetic. I might nap and I might not. I have sticky fingers and I like being alive.
Today I am going to try to remember how to do that.
Play! And the comment zen blanket fort.
The usual. We all have our stuff. We’re all working on our stuff. It’s a process.
The important thing is not one technique versus another, but the approach.
If you would like to play, yay!
You can approach something like a two year old might today. Or a tree. Or a pirate.
Or invent your own experiment.
Everyone gets to have their own experience, and we don’t give unsolicited advice. Sparklepoints and macaroni for everyone. Kisses to the commenter mice, the Beloved Lurkers and everyone who reads.
SO. AWESOME. *love* I don’t believe I’ll try that in the office, but maybe later ;)I hope this works for you and you have a glorrrrrrrrrious day off!
OH weeeeeeeeeee. Happy play day for you darling.
Blissssssss.

Lovely! I’d like to spend some time today being a baby, perhaps four months old — taking in the world around me through new, fresh eyes, making slow, gentle eye contact with people and gifting them with sudden, sweet, flirty-baby grins.
Happy, happy be-yourself day, Havi!
*blowing kisses*
Love, Hiro
I don’t even remember what it was like to be two. But. Here’s what I think I would do today if I were two now:
I’d get on rain boots and go puddle jumping.
Five minutes later I’d get cold and wet. I’d start to sniffle. Somebody would bring me inside.
I’d take a bath! With bubbles! And little foam dinosaurs that stick to the sides of the bath!
I’d get out of the bath, and somebody would put one of those towels that has a ducky hood on my head. It would wrap up my whole body. I’d smile a big, wide, smile.
Then, somebody would set me on their lap on the couch. They’d read me a story about a friendly dragon. And I’d fall asleep.
Conclusion: I love being two!
If I were a two year old today I’d be crying and covered in snot due to my cold. I’ll save 2 for a healthy day.
Today I’m alternating between being the maid who I think used to live on my third floor and the lady of the house who is sick but has to do stuff because her husband the sea captain is out to sea. Every so often I peer out the window into the sleet and pray that he’s ok. Occasionally I dab my eyes with a hankie and then carry on.
I love the idea, Havi!
We all have the opportunity to be whomever we want, even if just for an hour each day. All we have to do is tell ourselves a different story we can star in. Too often we just accept someone else’s story and play some boring bit part in it, never doing the things we ache to do.
Here’s to writing your own tale.
Fabulous!!!!! The Girl would love this. She has had snow / weather days from school and has been inventing games with very complicated rules designed to ensure that she and only she wins. 🙂 She has been coloring and writing notes and eating cheese and playing “fair” on her yoga mat with her aminals (spelled according to pronunciation). She has also not removed the bathrobe I made her for Christmas and has incorporated snuggles and cartoon watching as well (this is a major treat for momma’s house). She also has grumpy and bored moments — and doesn’t get stuck in them!!!! (Whoa.) I’m not sure who has had more fun, her or me!!!
Enjoy!!!
All our love,
Maria and Pilar
“Look between our legs and be upside down. Upside down!”
This made me smile. When my boyfriend & I visited Japan, we made sure to see Japan’s “three great views” (from a poem written in 1643). One of them, to quote Wikipedia: “The canonical way to view Amanohashidate is to turn your back to it, then bend over and look at it upside down from between your legs — this is supposed to make the bridge appear as if it floats to heaven, and bring good luck.”

Whatever you’re looking at, I hope it brings you good luck today Havi!
So happy for you! Glad you are playing and splashing and laughing and waving today.
MACARONI
Macaroni!
Want!
*runs back into her fort*
My days are mostly run by a two year old, and his seven year old brother, and they are the best kids ever.
And some of the times it is heavenly in the blanket fort sort of way, like I’ve written about here:
http://www.ppdtojoy.com/2011/01/24/snuggles-poem/
But today was a snow day, so both were home from school, and I had a ton of work to do, and I tried doing some of it with them at home and nobody was happy.
And I so wish that I’d have just spent the day appreciating all the things you described in this post instead of grasping at the grown-up goals I had for the day.
Hugs.
An actual 2-year-old plans many of my days. It is kind of awesome. The downside of an actual 2-year-old, though, is that you have to clean up after them a LOT. A make-believe 2-year-old may be better in many ways. Also, much less snotty. 😉
