Week 318 of Wishing: a new foundation

very personal adsPersonal ads. They’re … personal!

I write a Very Personal Ad each week to practice wanting, and get clarity about my desires. The point isn’t getting my wish (though cool things have emerged from wishing), the point is learning about my relationship with what I want, and accessing the qualities. Wanting can be hard, it is easy to feel conflicted about it, and the reasons for that make this a surprisingly subversive practice…

Asking.

The past twenty four hours have been — for me — tumultuous, messy and full of upheaval, both internal and external.

I am feeling fragile, vulnerable, raw, unsure.

So, I am scrapping the post I’d been writing, and coming back to the grounding ritual (yes, it is a ritual that is grounding, and also a grounding-ritual) of coming here to find out what I want.

I need something more stable, more contained than free-form exploring, so I am just going to ask and keep asking the following questions:

  1. What do I want?
  2. What do I know about what I want?

Ask and keep asking. Here we go.

What do I want.

A new foundation.

What do I know about a new foundation?

I love double-meanings, and foundation is full of possible meanings.

A new foundation could be the literal foundation to a building, to a particular building I know of whose foundation is crumbling.

A new foundation could be metaphorical/symbolic grounding for me, a new way of being deeply connected and beautifully anchored.

A new foundation could be about being luminous. I don’t wear foundation, and I hardly ever wear makeup at all, but something about glowing, about a protective layer of light, yes, this speaks to me.

A new foundation could be an organization. Maybe it’s my new cover story: I oversee a foundation, yes.

A new foundation is kind of the best way to describe the work I’m currently doing with my hypnotist, healing backwards, both horizontally and vertically, through time and space. Destruction and Uncreation. Retroactive rebuilding. Replacing my foundation of trauma with a fountain of light.

Maybe my new foundation is being able to dance in particles of light, letting the ground reconfigure beneath me, who cares, I am always grounded in light.

What do I want.

Relief.

What do I know about relief?

Yesterday I went to a place that I no longer visit, and while I was there, a spider bit me on the inside of the wrist, exactly in the place where my lover kisses me.

The bite is huge, swollen, distracting, uncomfortable.

Relief is whatever is the most soothing, the most comforting, the most predictable in the sense of steady and reassuring.

I want relief in the form of loving and tender words whispered in my ear, spells cast in the form of beloved fingers writing words down my back.

I want relief in the form of healing. I want a sweet subsiding.

Relief can also mean financial relief. Relief can also mean someone taking over your duties so that you can rest. Relief is that wonderful exhale when you realize (or, sometimes: remember) that you are okay, that the people you love are okay.

There is relief in sculpture, the way something projects out from the flat surface, and there is relief in baseball when a new pitcher — the reliever — comes in. A reliever. I’ll take one of those please.

What do I want.

Home base.

What do I know about home base?

It’s part of my new foundation.

What do I want.

Clear-eyed trust.

What do I know about clear-eyed trust?

Let’s remember, my love, let’s remember:

Whenever we find something that looks like a pattern but it makes us feel bad, that’s a story we are creating (with the help of Scared Tiny Havi and maybe some monsters) about the intel at hand, and not the actual useful patterns.

Let’s look at the information without needing it to form a narrative about how I always get hurt.

What do I want.

New foundations made of light.

What do I know about new foundations made of light?

New foundations are made of light, because the earth ones just crumble away anyway, and light can take any form we want it to.

What do I want.

To take exquisite care of myself right now.

And always. But mainly right now.

What do I know about taking exquisite care of myself right now?

In grief as it is in grief:

Intense loving self-care. Asking for what is needed. Letting yourself be cared for. Letting other people figure out the details. Getting close to the floor.

Being the best possible mother to me. Being the best possible mother to tiny me. New foundations of that.

Crying as much as is needed. Naming things. Being grounded.

Coming back to this moment. Letting go of more in each exhale: knowing that exhaling is treasure. Taking in more light and love in the inhale, because each inhalation is treasure.

And: one fucking step at a time. That’s how trust works, right?

Though sometimes it also works in leaps and bounds, soaring like a trapeze artist, landing like a panther, all grace.

What do I want.

New forms of grounded. New forms of flying.

New ways to be tree and bird.

What do I know about new forms of grounded and flying?

When I was young, I used to have dreams about being kidnapped.

Young: as far back as I can remember, all the way until I left home.

In the dream, he was driving down my street, and I hid in my house, but then my mother, or, later on, my grandmother when she was living with us, invited him in.

I wasn’t able to explain that this person was dangerous, or maybe they refused to believe me.

I would duck out the back door, but he would find me, and I would run, but I couldn’t run fast enough, and then, sometimes, my legs would begin to bound, my feet would take off, brushing the ground and, with a few bumpy starts, I was flying above him and he couldn’t get me.

Sometimes he would still follow me, but I got good at flying higher and faster, at hiding until he gave up.

What would it be like to fly not out of fear but with joy, the way a trapeze artist flies.

What would it be like to fly the way my secret panther moves, each movement emerging from powerful embodied grace, the desire to move (not the desire to escape) is what sets me free.

What do I want.

A secret bolthole: a place just for me, a sanctuary.

What do I know about a place just for me?

It is small, compact, glowing, beautiful. Luscious Minimalism.

It is like a very miniature version of the Playground, the center I [verb-ed] in Portland for nearly five years.

Cozy, sweet, quiet, possibly disguised. Like a safe room, come to life. A parallel world version of the one that lives in my mind.

I can come and go as often as I like, and it waits for me, with love.

This is where I seed new foundations, where I practice walking through holograms of light.

Invitation.

You are invited to share many !!!!!! about my wishes and realizations here, to share anything sparked for you while reading, to say “oh wow, what beautiful wishes” to me and to each other, to wish your own wishes.

Now.

You know how, when everything gets turned upside down, none of the normal bits of life make sense?

Somehow it’s evening now, even though my body is telling me it’s early afternoon. And the thermometer says 90 degrees outside, but the house isn’t acting like that is true.

Everywhere I look in my living room, I suddenly see the color red where I didn’t notice it before.

What does Slightly Future Me have to say?

Ze: Remember the dream where you and Bella were riding carousel horses around the world, and the poles went all the way to the center of the earth, but you could go so fast because they were so stable?
Me: That was a good dream. I didn’t know her name was Bella then. So you’re saying that is an example of a new foundation?
Ze: I’m saying you have good allies, and that there are lots of cool forms that stability can take.
Me: How come I’m so good at being grounded and present for someone I love when they’re in crisis, or for me, when I’m in crisis, but then I lose my grounding so easily just walking down the street.
Ze: Because you’re hyper-aware of people who have erratic or possibly predatory energy, and because you’re still learning how to use your superpowers. Let’s practice remembering what grounded and present feels like.

Clues.

My dance teacher described a step as “digging a trench, but sexy”.

The superpower of Wildly Confident, Wonderfully Tranquil.

August - Trust MoreJune was RELEASE MORE, with the superpower of I am stronger than I think, and July was LOVE MORE, because this is a badass way to live.

Now we are in TRUST MORE, with the superpower of Wildly Confident, Wonderfully Tranquil.

I guess that’s the best possible month for everything falling apart, foundations crumbling, learning about new ones. Trust more, and then trust even more.

I am ready to learn to trust the ground, or at least to trust in my ability to walk on tightly-packed particles of light.

Things I find helpful for intentions and wishes…

Nap, dance, write, play, labyrinths. Get quiet. Sweet pauses, yes to red lights and purple pills, thank you to the broken pots. Costume changes. Skip stones. Body first. Thank you in advance. Eight breaths in eight directions:

Adventure. Rest. Horizons. Security. Passion. Sweetness. Clarity. Presence.

Progress report on past Very Personal Ads.

So. Last week aka Trust Returns..

Trust did in fact return to me in the form of the beautiful boy, who came back from the mountains and into my arms. And in the form of going all the way back to the beginning in my dance studies and starting over. And listening to my body.

Thank you, process of writing about wishes. Thank you, me who asked.

Ongoing Wishes. Everything is easier than I thought, and look, miracles everywhere. Ha, this doesn’t require my input! My business is thriving happily without me. I think like a dancer. It’s so perfect it turned out like this. Past me is a GENIUS. I have what I need, and appreciate it. I am fearless and confident. I state my preferences clearly, calmly and easily, no big deal. I claim my superpowers. Love more. Trust more. Release more. Receive more.

Keep me company! Or just say hi!

You can deposit wishes, gwishes, personal ads, superpowers, qualities, seeds, secret agent code, whatever you’d like, there’s no right way! Updates on past experiments are welcome too, as is sharing anything sparked for you.

Comment culture: This is safe space for creative exploration. We are on vacation from care-taking and advice-giving. We are here to play and throw things in the pot! With amnesty. Leave a wish any time you want.

Here’s how we meet each other’s wishes: Oh, wow. What beautiful wishes.

The 367th Chicken: off the rocker

Friday chicken

Reflecting on both the hard and the good parts in the week that was…

It is Friday Saturday and we are here.

The Chicken was all ready to go yesterday afternoon, but the collective of tiny squirrels who run the blogging software decided to keep giving me an error message so I couldn’t log in.

So I took that as an invitation to take the day off, and now we are here! Also, happy 150th day of Shmita to me!

{a breath for this space, and for being here when we get here.}

What worked this week?

Intentional naps.

We used to do this at Rally. You get stuck on something, so you ask incoming-you to reveal a clue while you sleep, or go eat pie.

And then you take a break — an INTENTIONAL BREAK, so that the monsters don’t throw a fit about how this is selfish and indulgent and a waste of time. You remind them that this is a technique, and an experiment, and, for scientific purposes, this will only work if they aren’t messing with it.

The subconscious/unconscious delivers. Or possibly the nap fairies.

I did this a lot this week: told myself that I was going to do something restful, asked to have some new information on the other side.

It might have even worked too much? Seriously, I had who is Keyser Soze levels of understandings and insights this week, to the point that I was getting whiplash from the speed of my epiphanies. But it worked.

Next time I might…

Remember my job title.

I have trouble with decisions whenever I forget these two pieces of truth:

  1. I know more about what I want than anyone else knows about that topic!
  2. I am allowed to want what I want! I might not get what I want, but I’m allowed to want it, and to know what I want and not hide that information from myself in an attempt to keep me safe from criticism.

So. From now on, I plan to just walk around thinking about how I am the top researcher in the world in the field of Havi Studies.

Indeed! And therefore I am an EXPERT at Decision-Receiving* because I have invested so many years of training, study, and research. I know better than anyone what Current Havi might want and need.

* Decision-Receiving, not Decision-Making, because what’s that?!

And the title of my upcoming Biopic if it were based on this week…

You know what? Maybe later. The Havi Brooks Story.

If you feel drawn to leave comments on aspects of my week, I will take love, hearts, breaths, pebbles, I do not need advice or cheering up, though presence and sweetness are appreciated. Hearts or pebbles are great if you don’t know what to say, often I don’t know what to say either so we’re in the same boat.

Eight breaths for the hard, challenging and mysterious.

  1. I have been experimenting with a practice I call Wanting Without Why, which is allowing myself to want something without needing to list the reasons. It is SO HARD. I’m constantly aware of how desperately I want to explain and defend myself! This is a good exercise for the month of Trust More, and it is showing me all my patterns. A breath for easing and releasing, the theme of this year.
  2. My lover is backpacking in the Sierras for ten days, out of cell range. I haven’t heard from him since Saturday. I miss him terribly. I know he’s okay because I can feel him thinking of me, like a warm flush of heart-glow, but that’s not the same as words. I like words. I was hanging in there with just the warm-glow communication until yesterday evening, and that is when I got to experience entirely new sliding-off-the-rocker levels of missing. A breath for Trust More. Thanks, last-year-me for (literally!) putting that on the calendar.
  3. Still working on figuring out how to protect, love and tend to my unique pace of learning, and this is not easy stuff. A breath for patience, tenderness, for getting used to being someone who advocates for themselves as a matter of course.
  4. My body has developed an allergy to trapeze. Not to being on it (or trying to get up on it), but to getting enough sleep to go to class. It just goes on strike the night before. So that’s interesting and useful, and I’m respecting my body and not going, but the allergy part is not fun and the exhaustion is not fun. I don’t feel scared of the class. The instructor is lovely, the pace is good, I feel comfortable just going to part of the class, and advocating for myself as I need, and leaving early. But my body is not having it, and comes up with some sort of crisis that just so happens to be a few hours before the class starts so that I can’t go. Which is fine. Body knows best, body comes first. I am okay with not pushing, I am okay with not going, I am okay with back to bed. But this allergy is exhausting. Come on, babe. Let’s just say what we want without going through this rigamarole. A breath of sweet permission and endless healing.
  5. Speaking of my trapeze allergy, everyone I talk to about this says something like “oh, well, it’s okay to be scared”, and it is so unbelievably frustrating and I want to punch them. I know I am scared of pretty much everything, but really and truly I’m not scared of this class. This is not trapeze like “she flies through the air with the greatest of ease” or whatever people might be picturing. It’s just a sturdy, round hoop that’s five feet off the ground, with giant mats underneath. It might theoretically be scary if you forget how to get down? I wouldn’t know though, since I can’t pull myself up yet. And, anyway, they also have a practice hoop that is barely off the ground. Fear is not the issue here. And I don’t need to be given permission to be afraid. I give that to myself, all the time, for everything in life. A breath for the part of me who hates perceiving that she is misunderstood, and a breath for getting back to my yes.
  6. Speaking of exhaustion, my trip to Seattle on Saturday took much longer than anticipated, and I didn’t get back until 3:30am. My body can’t handle stuff like that anymore, and it didn’t like being in a car for eight hours, even if that was broken up by many hours of movement. A breath for me, and for learning this new way of taking care of myself and advocating for myself.
  7. I have had this idea in my head for the past nearly two years that if I “just took the time” to actually work on dance drills, I’d be able to get certain movements and concepts into my body and see/feel actual progress. Nope. This week I had both the time, energy and commitment to put two hours a day into re-learning the most basic movements, and nothing. I mean, nothing. I’ve been really invested in the fantasy that all I need to do is carve out a few hours here and there, and the slow motion montage will take care of itself. Turns out we are dealing with a much bigger learning curve than I had understood or been able to anticipate, and not feeling ANY change was incredibly frustrating. Oh well. A breath for wax on and wax off, and, yet again, trusting the process.
  8. Inhale, exhale. May all misunderstandings and distortions, internal and external, dissolve in love if not in laughter. Goodbye (and thank you), mysteries and hard moments of this week. May I choose to trust-more love-more release-more receive-more.

Eight breaths of good, reassuring, delight-filled.

  1. I am better at taking care of myself and advocating for myself now than I have ever been in my life. A breath for all the healing that is happening, and the superpowers of permission, attentiveness and going back to bed.
  2. Last week I mentioned the PROTOCOL — when I can’t get a sense of what I want (and when I pretend to myself that I don’t know, but I feel really vague and I can’t feel my feet), I remember that I’m probably disassociating, or there’s some reason I don’t want to let myself know what I want. Anyway, the protocol in that situation is Apply Emergency Extreme Self-Care Immediately and do something really calming for my body. I usually save the protocol for emergencies, but this week I just applied it to everything. I mean, if that’s not Shmita-mindset, what is? A breath for the completely radical practice of sweetness, with all the beautiful surprises it is bringing.
  3. Given the circumstances (extreme exhaustion, lover has disappeared, perceived failings, monsters everywhere), you’d think I’d be pellet-pushing (twitter, facebook, instagram) or other forms of modern self-medicating, or following whatever old, familiar not-necessarily-healthy pathways. I’ve been staying offline. I’ve been breathing and walking and checking in with small, scared me. A breath of gratitude.
  4. I was able to access entirely new levels of Kindness this week, both inwardly and outwardly directed. A breath for how beautiful and sweet this is.
  5. I followed my instinct and the joy spark trails, and went to TRE (thank you, Leocadia) and Feldenkrais, and took care of my body in a variety of ways, and skipped trapeze again, and made time for dance drills, and had three hour naps and gave myself good food. A breath for all of this.
  6. The semi-secret Bell of Belltown Op in Seattle was full of inspiration and small miracles, and I got to know a dance acquaintance much better than before, and it turns out that she is a bright, kind, interesting, thoughtful person, so now I have a new dance friend. A breath for treasure.
  7. I am having a much easier time than usual being an ally and fairy godmother to myself — to current me and to all the versions of Tiny Me and Past Me, and to plant clues and gifts for Incoming Me, and all of this feels so good, and so important. A breath of appreciation for all parts and aspects of this awesome commune of wildly eccentric, sensitive, interesting people who are all me, I’m so glad we all get to play together, and so thankful I live in a time and culture where this is a thing I can talk about, albeit mostly only here.
  8. Thankfulness. So much is good. Scrambled eggs and avocado. Frozen almonds dipped in Mayan cocoa. Cool breezes. Month of trust. Clues everywhere. Everything is okay. Nothing is wrong, even when I think it is. Now is not then. All Timing Is Right Timing. Thankful for this grand adventure. A full breath of deep appreciation in my thank-you heart.

Wham booms, wisdom, superpowers, salve and FBOTW!

Operations completed. Wham boom!

Whoosh Ha Mastodon Boom is secret agent code meaning: this thing is done! Shortened to wham-boom.

The Seattle op happened. Laundry happened. A hundred tiny little pieces moved in seemingly insignificant ways but it happened. Received two big (and very clear) decisions on things that had been weighing on me. Calling this a successful mission, and I now award myself a hundred billion sparklepoints. Wham Boom.

Superpowers I had this week…

I had the superpower of going back in time and changing memories. I also had, briefly, the superpower of Deep Deep Deep Trust That All Is Well.

Powers I want.

Same as last week, please: the superpowers of Beautifully Anchored, Deeply Trusting, and, of course, I am a Powerful Slinky Very Relaxed Panther

The Salve of Beautifully Anchored.

These invisible salves are distributed here by way of internet magic. Help yourself! Take it in a bath, as tea, a cocktail, whatever works for you. Not only is there enough salve, there are also enough ways to receive it.

The primary dance I do, west coast swing, is a luscious, creative, playful, improvisational, deliciously gooey dance, and it is very much about anchoring.

My partner me sends me in a direction and I set off in that direction until they stop me, and then I anchor, keeping my energy headed in the original direction, like a boat drifting with the water after the anchor has been set, until I am sent in a new direction. Trusting the process, alive and powerful, delighting in what happens along the way.

This is not about obedience. This is about Agency and Play, within the container or game of “here is the direction of the wind in your sails”.

This salve does the thing that happens in this dance, but to your entire life. You put a dab on your skin (or as much as you want), and then it just happens.

You happily follow a trail, a thread, a scent, a clue, a wish, a desire, a good feeling of YES. You project your energy in this direction until you get redirected by life/source, and instead of an abrupt stop of Uh Oh Something Is Wrong, you just easily and calmly feel into the familiar direction, and then slowly drift your way into this new direction, taking your beautiful sexy time, moving with your breath, shifting course in the most steady and natural way.

This is a salve of Grounding, Magic, Flow, Passion, Creativity, Joy and Safe Passage.

Playing live at the meme beach house — the Fake Band of the Week!

My brother and I make up bands, which are all just one guy. The Meme Beach House is the venue.

Week 317 of Wishing: Trust Returns.

very personal adsPersonal ads.

Love into trust.

Saturday morning was a flurry of getting ready for my day trip to Seattle.

Just when I had everything ready, I was exiting the kitchen, and saw the Fluent Self calendar on the wall, and stopped in my tracks. We’re in August now.

And guess what this month is! The month of TRUST MORE.

Mmm-hmmmmmmm.

Loving my way into trust.

It suddenly occurred to me how thrilled I am with how last month turned out, aka the month of LOVE MORE. With its superpower of This Is A Badass Way To Live.

The beginning of July saw my lover coming back to me and Portland, and I thought this month — for me — might include new understandings about closeness and interpersonal love, being someone who can glow love towards another person, and feel safe and comfortable receiving it.

And yeah, we did have an exceptionally vulnerable, tender, sweet loving month together, and also I had serious Ludicrous Fear Popcorn on the topic of oh no what if actually die of too much pleasure.

So, that was a useful component of the month of Love More: noticing all the moments in which I think I’m not allowed to have love, or the bad things I think will happen if I let love in. But that wasn’t the main thing about the month of Love.

The main thing turned out to be a mind-altering life-altering taste of what it might mean to be in a state of deep, enduring Self-Love, Self-Kindness and Self-Acceptance.

And.

And I learned that I live the quality of love through intentionally creating more loving and supportive environments for me.

And eventually I was able to recognize how badass that is.

And then, through all this love, I actually went and did legitimately badass (for me) things, like hip hop and burlesque, and trying trapeze, and floating in a sensory deprivation tank for an HOUR AND A HALF like a boss.

And I learned about advocating for myself so that these environments and experiences can support my sensitivities, and the unique (and sometimes very slow) way that I learn.

What treasure awaits in learning to trust (more)?

The month of Love More brought about a big shift in how I think, and in how I am approaching Shmita.

I am very excited and a little nervous about getting to know TRUST in a new way too, and also about this month’s very sexy superpower of wildly confident, wonderfully tranquil.

I am like a mad scientist in a basement lab, peering over beakers to see how love and trust will interact, mixing these new TRUST MORE superpowers with everything I’ve been learning about being loving towards myself, and, as an extension of this, being loving towards the people and experiences I encounter.

Looks like lots of discoveries to be made. So let’s start with what we have so far, in the form of clues.

Here are the clues I currently have related to TRUST MORE.

These are my clues, they might or might not be clues for you, because People Vary. I will trust (TRUST MORE!) that you will find the right clues for you, whether here or elsewhere.

Clues that are seeds. Also: clues about seeds.

  • Things that are seeded, sown, strewn.
  • Light can be seeded, sown, strewn.
  • “A ship in port is safe; but that is not what ships are built for.” — John Augustus Shedd.
  • I have read that quote before but this time it landed differently for me, thanks to Elizabeth Wartluft who said, “I read that every day, and try not to let my vulnerability keep me hiding from growth.” YEAH!
  • In parallel to the above: May I always remember that Adventure and Safety are not mutually exclusive, they are qualities of the divine and so they are playmates. I can choose Safety First and adventure. I can choose to adventure deep into Safety. I can choose vulnerability and growth. So let me be brave in the ways that are brave for me, and let me trust that this is the right process.
  • And: I have so much fear that Trust Will Lead To Getting Hurt, but actually safety comes from trusting my wise instincts.
  • Easing and releasing is how trust returns to my body and my nervous system.

Clues of yes.

  • DRASTIC. This is the name of the color on my toenails right now. This is also how I feel, in general, about everything, but in a good way.
  • I typed “new levels of tryst” instead of new levels of trust. See? Love more, trust more. And tryst more. Yes, please.
  • Mmmmm, all the superpowers of YES PLEASE: activate!
  • I read the phrase “She loves dance, travel and crop tops” in an instructor bio, and this set off a chain reaction of neon-colored sparks in my mind. What would it be like to be someone who loves crop tops? Or to be someone who could comfortably tell people this as a primary thing about themselves? Do they not have my “oh god you’re so shallow, how do you live with yourself, no one can ever know what a terrible person you are” monsters? What is THAT like? It sounds fun! It sounds like Freedom.
  • Luscious Minimalism. That might be my new favorite Unlikely Combination.
  • Marlena Wild aka Incoming Me, and her superpower of IDGAF x1000000.

Clues of connections.

  • Not knowing what I want (or thinking I don’t know what I want) is Early Radar Detection Alert that I’ve gotten disconnected from myself. Even if it’s something very small. Back to the PROTOCOL of Apply Extreme Self-Care Immediately.
  • Mermaid origin story? Rethinking everything about that.
  • Follow the trails of sparks, and do nothing else. If it doesn’t feel like a trail, don’t follow it.
  • Everything pulses. Like in music: One-twooooooo. One-and-twooooooo. But not just music. Everything pulses.
  • Everything coming into my life now is related to (and healing) the old story-seed of Bird vs Tree. TRE is being like a tree. TRAPEZE is being like a bird. Hypnosis and floating are like being tree birds. Dancing west coast swing is like being an anchor and a boat and a magician and a feather, all at the same time.
  • Again, trust is knowing that there is no contradiction: you are allowed to access seemingly mutually-exclusive things at once. Either/or is invariably a lie.

Clues about ingredients.

  • Ingredients Are Everything.
  • Panther walks.
  • I was wishing out loud at the Secret Sword Society that DIVORCE PARTIES were a thing, and then I followed a trail of sparks to a class that I really want to take, and the woman who teaches it also runs Divorce Parties. So there you have it.
  • As I have been saying for the past ten years: If we approach the process of habit change from guilt, then the habit we are reinforcing is guilt. So let’s change that.
  • Eight slow breaths change everything.
  • Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat until it lives inside of you.
  • Trust returns. Everything that is needed returns.

What else do I know about this wish?

Actually, I don’t think I need to explore this more, at least not at the moment.

I think part of trust is just planting the seeds of intention: it is enough right now to know that TRUST MORE is what I want. This is my direction, now I follow it.

And I can trust that all of these clues are seeds of light, and they will do what they need to do, or I can investigate any of them whenever I feel pulled that way.

What if this is enough? What if TRUST MORE is enough?

And again, thinking about everything I received from the month of Love More, what if I am enough?

Mmmmmmmm. Heart-sigh for that.

Anything else I want to plant?

Curiosity, Play, Wonder, Delight, Expectancy, Undoing, Passion and Sanctuary.

And I am ready to let everything I know or think I know about Trust dissolve and reconfigure in marvelous new ways. I am ready to immerse myself in the kaleidoscope while still very aware of where I am and where the kaleidoscope is.

Invitation.

You are invited to share many !!!!!! about my wishes and realizations here, to share anything sparked for you while reading, to say “oh wow, what beautiful wishes” to me and to each other, to wish your own wishes.

Now.

I am testing out being someone who likes crop tops by wearing one IN THE PRIVACY OF MY OWN HOME where no one can see me.

I had this weird moment while trying it on in the dance shop. My mother was there. My mother is no longer alive, but that doesn’t stop her from sharing her opinions, and she does not like crop tops.

She was saying things like, “You want to walk around showing everyone your pupik?! What will people think? They’ll think you look like a whore is what they’ll think. Wouldn’t it be better to dress your age? You don’t want to invite unwanted attention.”

And then, over her, in the next dressing room, I hear this other mother saying to her daughter, who was maybe in ninth grade, “How’re you doing on booty shorts, babe? You need some more?”

And there was snick-snick sound/sensation in my mind, a quick series of electric discharges, during which I tried — and failed — to simultaneously hold these two different forms of mothering in my mind. The kind that loves so much that it wants to protect at any cost, and the kind that loves so much that it wants to play.

Of course we’ve already established there are no contradictions: Safety and Play can co-exist. I know this in my heart and I know it in my head, but the wiring between the two is still not all connected up. So here I am. Practicing. With love and trust.

What does Slightly Future Me have to say?

Ze: I’m always here for you.
Me: This whole Self-Kindness thing is really intense, and I didn’t even know it existed. I feel so fiercely about taking care of myself right now. I’ve never felt that way before. The closest I’ve gotten is recognizing that I need to. This is different.
Ze: Yup. You got there through Love, and now it’s time to Trust that taking care of yourself and advocating for yourself is actually a revolutionary approach to being alive.
Me: Lots of fear that people won’t like it.
Ze: Sounds normal. Well, let’s invoke the superpower of Shit Is Not About Me, and the deeper version of that which is I Remember That Other People Are Free Beings So I Don’t Project Onto Them Things They Might Be Thinking About Me, They Can Think Whatever They Want And I Don’t Need To Make Guesses To Ensure My Safety Because Now Is Not Then And These People Have No Authority Over Me, Ta Da!

Clues.

On Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, they interviewed Chance The Rapper (content warning for horrible ads underneath this post, don’t scroll down!), and one of the panelists asked if forty six years old is too late to start a career as a hip hop artist.

Chance thought about the question and then said, “No, I don’t think so. It might even be too soon…”

I love these two aspects of trust, I love how they are yet another unlikely combination.

Maybe the combination of wild confidence and wonderfully tranquil are what allow me to believe that Trust is here, and that Trust returns.

The 366th Chicken: I was wrong!

Friday chicken

Reflecting on both the hard and the good parts in the week that was…

It is Friday and we are here.

{a breath for Friday, for this space, for being here when we get here.}

I realized this week that it seems kind of weird to say Chicken 366 as if we are assigning a number to a being, when in fact it is the 366th week that we are engaging in a process. So. Experiments in title format.

What worked this week?

Having a PROTOCOL.

When I found myself surrounded by internal monster-hordes at five am, all shouting reasons to not skip trapeze class, but also reasons about why going would be disastrous, I didn’t know what to do.

I couldn’t hear what I really wanted or needed. It was kind of terrifying.

But then I remembered the PROTOCOL: Apply Extreme Self-Care Immediately!

So I went back to bed, and slept for three delicious hours in a cocoon of sweet healing permission, and when I woke up, I knew that not going to trapeze was the most loving and respectful thing I could have given my body that day.

Ah, that’s why there’s a protocol. Even if, in the moment when I remembered the protocol, it felt vague and fuzzy and I wasn’t entirely sure what it meant. I was still able to ask, “How do I best take care of myself?”. So here’s to protocols, and all the superpowers of intentionally and powerfully Going Back To Bed.

Next time I might…

Not let the monsters write the titles to my blog posts.

I want to apologize to you guys. Last week I wrote a chicken called “Joining the circus is not a viable option”. And I was completely wrong.

That was my monsters writing the title, and we had a good meeting, and they have now retired from all forms of copywriting.

There are so many wonderful ways that I was wrong!

For one thing, a friend of mine told me that she had directed her friend to this blog, and then her friend decided to quit their job and JOIN AN ACTUAL CIRCUS. Wow! Can you even imagine the joy and wild delight I feel at having even theoretically played a tangential part in this marvelous and inspiring story?!

And then Vicki commented that her brother had joined the circus even though he couldn’t trapeze, and he fed the elephants. She pointed out that not everyone in the circus performs — you can cook, you can do maintenance, you can contribute, there are LOTS of ways to join the circus.

Of course! I was just in a state of self-directed monstering, and also suffering from the cultural thing about how you supposedly have to (especially if you’re a woman) be self-deprecating and self-critical all the time. What a great reminder that my monsters don’t get to title my posts.

MAY WE ALL REMEMBER THAT WE ARE FREE TO JOIN AS MANY CIRCUSES AS WE WANT TO, IF AND WHEN THAT’S WHAT WE WANT, AMEN.

And the title of my upcoming Biopic if it were based on this week…

Oh, cool! What else might I be wrong about? The Havi Brooks Story.

If you feel drawn to leave comments on aspects of my week, I will take love, hearts, breaths, pebbles, I do not need advice or cheering up, though presence and sweetness are appreciated. Hearts or pebbles are great if you don’t know what to say, often I don’t know what to say either so we’re in the same boat.

Eight breaths for the hard, challenging and mysterious.

  1. I don’t think my body has ever hurt so much as it did after trapeze. All week. So many unhappy muscles! I got emergency massage and emergency Feldenkreis and spent ninety minutes in a floatation tank, and still could barely even dress myself this week. Between the physical discomfort and the frustrations of learning to love my unique pace of learning, it was rough. A breath for easing and releasing, the theme of this year.
  2. My lover is a natural athlete who just launches himself into any new challenge with grace, agility and fearlessness. Oh, and then immediately excels at it. Racing motorcycles, breakdancing, parkour, whatever — if it’s impossible and terrifying, he’s good at it. I admire this tremendously! And I had Ludicrous Fear Popcorn all week because now he knows I cried my way through remedial trapeze, while not physically able to get on the trapeze. Clearly (say the monsters), he will want to trade me in for someone much more impressive/courageous. One assumes this imaginary upgraded version of me is a successful hip hop dancer who does extreme triathlons for fun and rides a unicycle to her incredibly meaningful job. A breath of love for small me who forgets how to trust life and stirs imaginary comparison stew. And a breath of laughter, because while Ludicrous Fear Popcorn is always legitimate, it is also always ludicrous and therefore funny.
  3. The third or fourth heat wave of the summer. Enough is enough. A breath for taking this as a Redirection. Let’s find somewhere to live that is not 102 degrees Fahrenheit (39 Celsius), because that is too much. Or, alternately, let’s find somewhere with air conditioning.
  4. Oh, the patterns. Oh, the stew-stirring. Oh, the forgetting to be gentle with myself. As I said last week: Loving yourself as you are is not for the faint of heart. A breath of deep permission and acknowledgment for being who I am, as I am, where I am, right now, in this moment, with all that this entails.
  5. Lots of trouble (or the perception of trouble!) with accessing my True Yes this week. A breath for trust and for reducing input.
  6. Oh hello, late thirties monster-driven identity crisis: What do I want to be doing? Where do I want to be doing it? A breath for all the big questions, and for not needing answers yet, and for taking exquisite care of myself while I explore.
  7. Taking care of my body with its aches and pains and [alternatively-abled learning] is expensive and time-consuming, and I just want to hide in a lovely bath and not have to do anything or worry about anything, and just watch cop shows and eat peanut butter. A breath for this wish.

  1. I said this last week and I will say it again: I am the bravest person in the entire world! I recovered from TRAPEZE! I spent ninety minutes floating in a dark isolation tank! I went to the super hard hip hop class that is supposedly easy but it isn’t! I told people what I wanted and needed! I tried new things! I went back to bed! A breath for saying GOOD JOB, BABE.
  2. My big wish/intention this week was I Advocate For Myself Joyfully! And I did. And amazing things happened as a result. I was able to give people really specific information about how I learn, what I need, how they could help. And instead of thinking that was incredibly annoying (which was the monster-fear), they were delighted to have that information. A breath for radical honesty, radical sovereignty, and for the magic of what is supportive for me is actually good for everyone involved.
  3. My beautiful lover, who somehow just radiates warm, sweet loving acceptance towards me at all times. And thinks I’m brave. Go figure. We are sweet and hot and magical together, and I feel this intense spilling-over-of-joy when I think about him or feel him thinking about me. A breath for this full and happy heart, and immense gratitude for this thing I didn’t even know I wanted.
  4. Somehow everything that needed to get done this week got done. It seemed impossible but it happened. I credit the Monster Manual, which helped with everything, and the Secret S-Word Society. Oh, and the Sail of YARD got canceled due to rain, and that turned out to be perfect, because it allowed me to discover that this had not been my true yes. A breath of wonder and thank you.
  5. So much joy and healing and joyful healing this week! I explored mysteries! I had beautiful dreams and extraordinary naps. I uncovered memories in the floating tank and in hypnosis (which is its own kind of floating tank), and understood things I hadn’t understood before. I learned about my body and about next steps, and practiced Wild Uninhibited Gentle Self-Forgiveness. I felt immense gratitude for Shmita where I am committed to giving myself the time to just be instead of making and doing. A breath for the fruits of Quiet Undoing.
  6. Had an absolutely phenomenal dance lesson where I got to practice being a Relaxed Panther, which is my new favorite thing. A breath for receiving this treasure in the moment I was ready to receive it.
  7. This was, again, and I don’t even know how this is happening, just a beautiful week for me. I felt light, bubbly, joyful, hopeful, full of life and aliveness. A breath of immense appreciation for all of this.
  8. Thankfulness. So much is good. Lovely glass bottle. Favorite rug. Marisa texted me from the Land of Math. I remembered that Asking For What I Want is a huge success, whether I get it or not.

I took exquisite care of myself. I planned a secret op. I heard and asked (and even answered) the scary questions. Calling that a successful mission, and I now award myself a hundred billion sparklepoints. Wham Boom.

Superpowers I had this week…

Last week I wished for the superpower of Releasing In Love Because I Do Everything From Love. And, incredibly enough, this is exactly what happened.

I also had the superpower of catching an unlikely bus, make of that what you will.

Powers I want.

I want the superpowers of Beautifully Anchored, Deeply Trusting, and, of course, I am a Powerful Slinky Very Relaxed Panther.

The Salve of Radical Self-Acceptance or: Me As I Am.

These invisible salves are distributed here by way of internet magic. Help yourself! Take it in a bath, as tea, a cocktail, whatever works for you. Not only is there enough salve, there are also enough ways to receive it.

So often I find myself wishing I was something I’m not (someone who would want to hang upside down from silks, or go backpacking in the mountains for ten days), and I forget that what I REALLY want in life is to love who I am, how I am, as I am, and not try to wish myself into being someone or something else.

When you rub this salve into your skin, there is a tingling peppery-sweet something, and then you are in this moment, meeting yourself, and suddenly noticing and appreciating all the lovely bits about your you-ness, your suchness.

You hug yourself tightly and say “hey, babe, here we are, I’m not going anywhere, I’m with you for this wild ride, and you, as you are, you are good and you held in love by me, right now and always.”

Or maybe what you say is different, and said in an entirely different way! People Vary and you are your own person. That’s just what this salve glowed through me. Whatever it glows through you will be good too.

Playing live at the meme beach house — the Fake Band of the Week!

My brother and I make up bands, which are all just one guy. The Meme Beach House is the venue.

This week’s band is from me trying to high five my brother via text, which didn’t work at all. The band is called HUGH FIVE. They are a five piece doo wop band composed of Hugh Grant impersonators who do sort of an awkward british take on the Jackson Five. They do solo scat bits that are basically just shy self-deprecating stammering to a beat. Their latest album is I Just David Copperfielded Myself. And not sure how this works, but it is just one guy.

Attenzione! Attention, AGENTS. Special CARE PACKAGES this week!

The marvelous Monster Manual is how I got through this week and was able to hear my YES again.

And if you want, you can get this with a Fluent Self Care Package, because I just made two Care Packages on the theme of Everything Is Okay.

They contain clues, Marvelous Reassurance, at least one squooshy companion for whatever you’re working on, and inspiring, calming Playground goodness. They should help very much with whatever you’re working on. And you get either the Monster Manual & Coloring Book (basic version) or the Art of Embarking course, whichever you like. That way you have techniques along with Playground magic.

Price: $76 for care package and ebook/course. I will cover shipping in the continental United States, otherwise ask the First Mate for a shipping estimate. Either way, email the First Mate if you want one!

How was your week?

Wish 316: unlikely combinations

very personal adsPersonal ads.

This week I am deep in the kaleidoscope of wishes.

With each slight movement of the kaleidoscope, the images and qualities reconfigure. Each variation is intimately connected to the one which preceded it, but also completely new and fully itself.

I want to give myself a container of spaciousness (this is not a contradiction) in which to leisurely observe all I am currently thinking about, without needing to document the connections, just trusting the interrelatedness of it all. Trusting the deep roots of the fractal flowers.

Or maybe I will just follow one thought and see where it goes…

A container of spaciousness.

I spent ninety minutes floating in a sensory deprivation tank the other day, because I am THE BRAVEST PERSON ON EARTH, but mainly because while searching for something else entirely, I happened upon a place that fits and even celebrates the way I am — which, interestingly enough, is exactly last week’s wish.

Suddenly I found myself in this marvelous, sweet, claustrophobe-friendly, permission-filled environment, a place that just glowed acceptance for people like me who feel UNDERSTANDABLY AND LEGITIMATELY hesitant about floating.

For one thing, they don’t need you to be the kind of person who is just ready to go straight into a dark silent tank of water, which frankly sounds kind of terrifying.

People who float always say it is so restful, and I nod, because the combination of deep quiet and weightlessness does sound kind of peaceful…

Except I’m ALSO thinking: Yeah I’m sure being trapped in some horrible coffin-womb while simultaneously feeling lost in outer space is extremely relaxing, how nice for you to be such a fearless person who can just hurl themselves into the abyss for fun, that is not me.

Safety First.

This place felt like it had been designed for someone like me, someone who already has enough trauma from [hard things] in life, and doesn’t need to ever experience anything terrifying again.

Anyone who has been to the Playground (the beautiful center I verb-ed in Portland for nearly five years) knows that I am a big believer in Safety First, and making new experiences comfortable and supportive for you, in the way that you need.

At this place, they think it’s absolutely okay to ease your way into floating.

You can wedge a towel between the door and the frame so soft light comes in. They remind you that it’s fine to exit the tank whenever you want. End the session early, take a break and have a hot shower, pause when you need to pause.

They talk about all the things I am passionate about: PLAY and CURIOSITY and taking time to explore your surroundings so you get a sense of where your body is in space, so you can feel safe letting go.

They let you know your time is up by piping relaxing music into the water, but they are also happy to knock on the door if you like that better.

And it worked.

I stood in the tank with the door open and then settled into the water with the door slightly ajar, with enough light to see my surroundings.

I let myself have as much time as I needed (which turned out to be maybe five minutes) establishing a clear sense of where my body was located in relation to the walls and the door, the space above me and below me and around me. I reassured my monsters and Tiny Me that we know exactly where the door is and how to open it.

We practiced closing our eyes and feeling what it would be like to be suspended in this state of darkness.

And I talked to the space, quietly, in my heart, and told it what I needed in terms of easing and releasing. I breathed qualities all around me. I asked the water and the salt to share with me their secrets of transmitting and of washing away.

And then I let the door close all the way, and allowed myself to sink into the darkness, using my fingers and toes to remind my body that we know exactly where we are, deep breaths, letting go.

What is a container of spaciousness.

It is something that is both cozy and expansive at the same time.

I came to floating with two fears — well, other than the fear of panic attacks, existential agony, getting trapped, giving up after five minutes, and a variety of flavors of Ludicrous Fear Popcorn related to truly ridiculous and impossible scenarios which I will not share with you because I don’t want you to have to add these fears to your list!

Mainly though I felt worried that I might feel trapped in an enclosed space, while simultaneously worrying about what if I feel lost and disoriented and unable to find the door.

I was delighted to discover that the tank had a wonderful coziness to it — I could float in the center, but I could also extend a limb in any direction and touch the steadiness of the edges. And it had a high sloping ceiling which gave a lovely sensation of plenty and spaciousness.

A container of spaciousness is river and banks of the river, it is voyage and ship, it is dreamland and cozy bed, it is being free and being held in loving arms, it is secret op and safe-house, it is liberty and sanctuary, it is adventure and home.

It is knowing that there is no contradiction: you are allowed to have both at once.

No contradiction.

When I was little, my father used to ask me if I would rather be a bird or a tree.

I wanted BOTH, I didn’t want to choose, but that wasn’t allowed.

It was worse than that, actually, because this was secretly a trick question. The correct answer was tree, and he frowned if you chose bird, and told you why you were wrong. I always chose bird anyway.

You weren’t allowed to be a Flying Tree either, it had to be one or the other.

I didn’t want to have to choose between freedom and safety, soaring or grounding, adventure versus steadiness, between discovering new places or always knowing that you are home.

And gradually I acquiesced to this false belief that you can only have one, or that you can only have one at a time.

Each of us learns or acquires this untruth in our own unique ways but somehow we all end up thinking that we are only allowed to have X and not Y, that the elements of our desires cannot ever co-exist, that we have to choose, we have to give up on what we want in order to have what we want.

Flowers for Tiny Me, flowers for my father, flowers for the courageous process of decolonizing and deprogramming, flowers for everyone who has ever had to make a choice, flowers for refusing to choose.

Circling.

I have spent my whole life circling around this and inside of this, resisting and succumbing to the familiar melody, to borrow that perfect image from the poet Natan Alterman:

“That melody still returns again, the one you tried in vain to neglect, and the road is still splayed open to its full length…”

That is my very inexact translation of an impossibly beautiful sentence. When he describes the road as open, he uses a word that is specifically used to describe eyes opening. The road is expanding, awakening, like a person.

It’s a poem about the intense passionate call of the road that pulls you to move and explore and experience things, and at the same time you miss the sweetness of the green grove of trees, a woman in her laughter, the place of belonging and love. And how whenever you have one, you long for the other, but you cannot stay because you need to be free, but oh how you miss your lover and so you return, but then the melody comes for you again.

The American version of this theme is the cowboy, I think.

The Eternal Cowboy Dilemma. It sounds like a band and it’s just one guy…

Eventually I realized that my dilemma is not in fact a dilemma.

Eighteen years ago Meirav asked me:

“What if it is actually a continuum? What if you don’t have to choose?”

That was a helpful starting point. I played with exploring roads and with building a home. I swung this way and that. I tested out different recipes, different combinations of freedom and shelter. I pushed edges and then retreated.

Later I realized that of course this is about Qualities, and qualities, being aspects of the divine, not only can co-exist, they must. They just do.

There is no Freedom without Safety, there is no such thing as Adventure without Sanctuary.

And then from there I began to work with permission to Want What I Want, in this very practice of weekly wishing, which helped me see that there is no dilemma, there is only the appearance of a dilemma, a mystery to explore.

And lately I have been combining qualities like ingredients, and noticing how the flavors enhance each other: what at first might seem an unlikely combination can be intensely powerful, deeply healing.

Sweet savory contradictions that aren’t contradictions at all.

Last week I talked about the superpower of FIERCE GRATITUDE (thank you, Carrie Ann Moss), which is a perfect example of a unique and unlikely flavor combination.

Then I mixed more ingredients to come up with SWEET COURAGE, which is how I ended up at the most loving and supportive place to experiment with floating, which takes place in CONTAINED SPACIOUSNESS.

I want to be a beautifully anchored wanderer: roaming and stable, rooted and free.

I want LANGUID ADVENTURING and JOYFUL STILLNESS, and glorious permission to be so many things at once.

What am I noticing about my wishes?

I can feel so many previous wishes in this. Like the theme of adding being to doing: Ha and Tha, sun and moon. Accommodating my sensitivities (and my sometimes snail-like pace of learning) with kindness.

Making room for the seemingly-contradictory experience of being both high sensation seeking (the thrill of newness!) and off-the-charts highly sensitive (extreme levels of Must Hide Immediately).

This is about loving all of me, and taking care of all of me, as I am. This is about advocating for myself, being intentional about how care for myself, choosing supportive environments.

Also big passion for social justice, passion that begins in my cells and expands outward: starting with being more present in my own space and then glowing these qualities into the world.

And appreciation for everything that got me here: flowers for everyone.

Invitation.

You are invited to share many !!!!!! about my wishes and realizations here, to share anything sparked for you while reading, to say “oh wow, what beautiful wishes” to me and to each other, to wish your own wishes.

Now.

Thinking about the Alterman poem made me think of the song version of it that Berry Sacharof did, which made me think of his collaboration with Fortis — Fortisacharof, which has to be the most Israeli album of all time, for me at least.

I am sitting in my living room on the couch, listening to the song Nitzotzot, and in my mind I am behind the bar, it’s Friday evening in Tel Aviv, I can feel the sun setting over the Mediterranean a few blocks away, the bar is mostly empty, everything is quiet.

I look up from my memory, back in my living room in Portland, and my friend who is dead is perched on top of the couch, the cigarette in his mouth is unlit because I don’t let him smoke in the house. He takes it out and smiles at me and says, “You are a vessel of light, and a vessel of light contains everything”, and then he wanders outside to smoke.

What does Slightly Future Me have to say?

Ze: You can combine ANYTHING you want, my love! You are the queen of tree-birds and bird-trees, you build entire worlds where things can co-exist!
Me: Sometimes I wonder if it’s good for me though, maybe I’m just oscillating.
Ze: You are an explorer and a Grand Adventuress, and you are also deeply committed to taking exquisite care of yourself. That’s not oscillating, that’s exploring and claiming your kingdom of wholeness.
Me: Sometimes it seems like people just want me to be one thing: sweet and spiritual, or wild and fun, or whatever. Like they can’t handle it that I am all of it.
Ze: Who cares what they want or what you think they might want. Your explorations are treasure, for everyone, whether they or you know it or not. Trust.

Clues.

This week has overflowed with clues for me, but what I want to remember is hearing a woman saying to someone, “Take special care”, her voice glowing warmth and presence, as if this was the most important thing she could possibly say.

The superpower of this is a badass way to live.

July - Love MoreJune was RELEASE MORE, with the superpower of I am stronger than I think, and July is LOVE MORE, because this is a badass way to live.

This is a badass way to live.

Giving myself permission to be all of me, in beautiful and seemingly-contradictory ways, to ease into new places, to grant myself extra safety, to take off and come back and give myself what I need. What if wild self-love and radical self-acceptance and meeting myself where I am is actually more badass than I think?!

Things I find helpful for intentions and wishes…

Nap, dance, write, play, labyrinths. Get quiet. Sweet pauses, yes to red lights and purple pills, thank you to the broken pots. Costume changes. Skip stones. Body first. Thank you in advance. Eight breaths in eight directions:

Adventure. Rest. Horizons. Security. Passion. Sweetness. Clarity. Presence.

Progress report on past Very Personal Ads.

So. Last week aka As I am…

I made many wishes and they were all useful. This week I practiced asking people to teach me things in a way that suits how I learn, and they were so happy to have extra information about what I need, instead of thinking it was annoying that I asked.
